The Forest of Dean

I am incredibly lucky in the fact that my job allows me to travel to the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire. For those that haven't been it is a glorious piece of a Royal Hunting Forest on the border of England and Wales.

When I am in the Forest I stay at the Speech House Hotel which is bang in the middle, it also holds the local Verderers Court which administers the Forest's local laws, this harks back to the Norman administration of the area.

It is also an ideal place to base yourself to explore the Wye Valley and surrounding areas, with Synonds Yat, Gloucester, Monmouth, Chepstow all within a 30 minute drive.
Symonds Yat

Symonds Yat is a National Trust property and car parking charges do apply, but the chance to see Peregrine Falcons is really high, and a big plus is the view which is outstanding at any time of the year.

Tintern Abbey is also another stunning River Wye place to visit and Tintern Village has some lovely pubs and restaurants if you feel peckish.

The wildlife in the Forest is truly makes it a gem in the UK. There are far too many species to name, but recently the Wild Boar have made it a mecca for photographers from the UK, unfortunately this is one animal that has eluded me when it comes to getting a decent image.

However, deer, insect and birdlife abound and there are opportunities everywhere. Landscapes are also well catered for with hidden lakes and streams, stunning vistas are plenty as well.

All in all the Forest of Dean is well worth a visit at anytime of the year.
